Monday 11th February 2008 - Today I set up my brand new bird box and camera. The very next morning I had two blue tits looking about inside. I and the birds are now waiting for spring, where our story will start again. This website allows you to follow the unfolding story. The pages document all the highs & lows through out the season. Please keep checking back for updates. I will start the diary when nesting begins. Please do keep an eye on the live web camera feed especially in the mornings as this is when most of the activity is happening.

Friday 22nd February 2008 - I have been away for a few days and I have just been looking back at the logs for my blue tit camera and have seen that last night there was a blue tit roosting. I have just had a quick look at the blue tit camera just before the light faded all together and I can see I have one roosting tonight as well. The fact that I have one roosting is a really good sine. I would think they will start nesting within a few weeks. Some of the pictures taken are very dark this is due to the light levels as the camera needs white light to get a FULL color image. If I were to just turn the light inside the box on I would run the high risk of scaring the blue tit away. I will start the diary properly when nesting begins.

Wednesday 25th March 2008 -

The last few days or so have been about the same. The birds seem to spend most of there time in the morning and late afternoon going in and out of the nest box. From time to time they will bring in some nesting materials and then put it around the box then take it out. The weather has been cold and very windy at times which I’m sure is slowing the whole progress down a little. It seems most if not all birds are thinking about nesting around the UK, but not taking the plunge just yet as the weather is very unpredictable at the moment

Saturday 15th March 2008 -

The last couple of days the weather has been quite simply all over the place! From lovely hot spring days to gale force winds hitting around the 85mph mark.

Today has been dull and very wet but yet very mild to. You can see from the picture the blue tits have not been put off by the weather and have today started to bring in test pieces of nesting materials.

Sunday 30th March 2008 -

The last few days the weather has been windy and wet and chilly. Today it’s a lovely spring day, the sun is shining and there is clear blue sky as far as then eye can see. Early this morning England put there clocks forward by one hour for the start of the British Summer Time.

The blue tits have been making the most of this lovely fine spring day with visits to and from the box all morning. You can see from the images on the right they have started to bring in larger amounts of nesting materials. Could this be test pieces or they are starting to build?

It’s hard to say really as blue tits are very well known for bringing in and then taking out nesting materials at the start of nest building. They can be. (Fussy things at times)

Thursday 3rd April 2008 - Today it has really stated to feel like summer with the temp just about hitting 19c. It has been by far the hottest day of the year for the south west of England so far. The blue tits have been working nonstop for most of the morning and afternoon sorting out and building there nest. You can see from the images below they have started to bring in even more nesting materials including what looks like tree bark.

I have been asked if it’s the male or the female bird which builds the nest. From what I have been told it’s the male which builds the nest but the female will to the finishing parts e.g. the nest cup its self. I guess its only fare; after all she is the one who will be sitting there.

I heard on the TV this evening that the weather is to get very cold this weekend with a possibility of snow showers. Will this happen and what effects will it have on are birds? Only time will tell.....

Saturday 5th April 2008 -

Today I was looking over the images which have been taken today and I believe I have seen the pear of blue tits mating inside then nest box. I will admit I’m not too sure about the mating habits of blue tits. I always thought they would mate before nesting happens but I’m not sure. Below are some images which were taken:

Wednesday 16th April 2008 -

Today it has been a mix of sunny weather with some clouds around. It has felt very warm in the sun and out of the wind but the birds are still being slow about building the nest cup. There have been many visits to the box throughout today so I’m not worried about them taking there time just yet. As the saying goes good things come to those who wait.

Saturday 26th April 2008 - Over the past few days Mum has been busy finishing off the nest cup, as you can see from the images she has come along way since of the start of nest building. From what others have said and from what I have seen it does look like the blue tits in my box are somewhat lagging behind on nest building and egg laying compared to other blue tits around the UK.

Mum has been roosting in the box every day since the 16th of April. . I would think egg laying will start any day know. The weather today has been lovely with blue clear skies and the tempachure reaching 22c (The hottest day so far this year)
