Welcome to The Blue Tits Nest Box Blog of (2001) This is the story of 2001 nesting season as it happend Page 1 of 2 |

Monday 2nd March 2001 -I saw two Blue Tits in box2 this afternoon. They were in the box for about 5 minutes. This is a very good sign as I have not seen anything in the box for a long while until now. Please keep a close eye on my news page for updates. Its still too early to say if they are definitely going to nest this year.
Wednesday
11th April 2001 - Yesterday and today I have seen what I believe to
be the male blue tit in the box. He has been placing pieces of moss in the nest
box for the last two days. I think these are test pieces as he is still trying
to attract a mate.
Saturday
14th April 2001 - As you can see from the picture the male blue tit has been
very slowly adding more dry moss. I think he is finding it very hard to attract
a mate. The weather is not very good at the moment as it is cold with a few rain
showers.
Friday 20th April 2001 - For the last two days there has been some very strange things going on in box3! The blue tits will bring in moss into the box. Then they will take it out. At one time the box was coved but I have found this morning there is not very much in at all. They have just started to bring things in once more!! I am looking into this and I will let you all know what's going on "I hope"
Sunday
22nd April 2001 - Tonight I have got one of the nesting blue tits roosting
in the box This is the first time I have had one roosting in the box! I think
I have found the answer to the blue tits very strange behave lately. I think the
blue tits that are nesting are not the culprits. From what people have told me
it is more likely to be another blue tit nesting near by who is pinching the moss
from inside box3! The picture to the left shows that there has been some more
moss added since the last picture.
Tuesday
24th April 2001 - As you can see from the picture the blue tits have put on
a burst of nest building speed. You can see Mum in what will be the nest cup.
There is still a long way to go until the nest is completed!
Friday 27th April 2001 - The nest is know more or less complete. There is still some more work to be done on the nest cup before egg laying can take place. Every night since the 22nd of April Mum has been roosting in the box. I do not think it will be too long now until the first egg will be laid. "Keep watching"
Sunday 29th April 2001 - This morning when I came down about 8:30am I saw
to very small eggs in the blue tits box. I think Mum must have laid the first
one yesterday and then covered it up. If the great tits are any thing to go by
Mum should lay one every day from know on.
Wednesday 2nd May 2001 - There are five eggs in the blue tits box. There was only five in the great tits nest box. Will there be more in the blue tits box than the great tits? Time will tell......From when the first egg was laid there has been one new egg appearing every morning.
Sunday
6th May 2001 - There are eight eggs in box3 the number is just going up and
up. Can a little bird like a blue tit sit on all eight??? Only time will tell.
Monday 7th May 2001 - Mum has started to incubate her eggs. It will take about 14 days for them to hatch. I will be putting an image of Mum sitting on the nest very soon.
Sunday
13th May 2001 - Mum is still sitting on her eight eggs it should be only a
few days now until the eggs are due to hatch!!
Thursday
17th May 2001 - This morning I went up to box3 to get a colour picture of
inside the box! You can see all of the eight eggs are all in a very nice and neat
nest! In should be no more than a week until hatch day!
Diary continues..........on page 2
