Feeding Tips / Guidelines

Feeding squirrels can be controversial. After consultation with the interested parties here are some guidelines for safe squirrel feeding. Which species visit your garden? If Red - OK to feed. If Grey - OK to feed, but only if far away from Red Squirrel populations. If Red and Grey squirrels- use the metal, Red Squirrel only, feeder. If you are providing peanuts for bird feeding and the squirrels have been eating them, you will find that peanuts, hazelnuts and cobnuts are successful.

If you do not feed birds, then a mixture of whole maize, peanuts and sunflowers are successful. The Mammal Society is carrying out a survey of all the mammals in gardens of the UK. Gardens are an essential habitat and it is vital that we know to what extent mammals are dependant on our gardens.
